RWE

Technology explainers, PowerLine and first smart-home concepts.

RWE · two parallel projects

Technology you have to see in order to sell it

Two technology explainers running at the same time: internet over the power socket, and the first smart home concepts. Both went into B2B communication and out to the sales force, and both had to do something a datasheet cannot.

PowerLine. I was the lead designer here. Internet over the electricity grid needed explaining down to the detail, and nobody buys what they cannot picture. So we told the technology through animation and interaction: information architecture and visualisation, not a brochure.

Smart home. The second project ran in the neighbouring team; I was part of it with a smaller share. The comparison was what made it interesting: two subjects from the same company that had to work in completely different visual languages.

The content did not originate with us, it was developed together with RWE. We gathered the data and the right contacts inside the company, worked our way deep into the technical relationships, and reviewed every sketch and prototype with the specialist departments. Only then did the visualisation begin.

That order is why explainers like this work: anyone who has not understood the technology cannot simplify it either.
